Fun Dog Bed Ideas as Gifts

October 16th, 2009

Last Christmas, our daughter-in-law to be gave us a couple dog beds as gifts. Never thought of something like that as gifts before, it turned out to be great all around for al the humans here and the animals.

Since the dogs already had beds, these extras have been in use on another floor of our two-story home, making the dogs - -and our furniture downstairs along with our wallet and bank account – very happy. Less furniture abuse from dogs being on it means less money out of pocket for updating arm covers and seats.

For ideas on the gift-giving of dogs couches to pet lovers you know, here are some helpful tips:

1) If you are short on cash, think about checking for left over dog bed models from last year at wholesale clubs and warehouse centers. Also look for coupon and other specials at online locations and locally, via newspaper coupons, mailers and other offers that come your way. These types of offers often include free shipping and / or a percent or certain amount off with your purchase. Pet stores, stores that have pet departments (like Wal-Mart and Target) and online stores all have offers like these.

2) Going along with #1 above, ask your neighbors, family and others to keep an eye out for you for specials. Tell them you’ll keep an eye out for them, too, and see what types of purchase they’re trying to find deals on.

3)  Think about making your own designs, too. You can find free patterns on the web (in one of my hubs, in fact!) with instructions for making your own bed. You can also look for more patterns in local sewing stores along with neat fabrics, stencils, lace and other trims to make them unique and awesome.

4) For the discerning pet and family, or those with special needs and other animals who could use a little extra health help, think about orthopedic dog beds and search for these, too. These types of beds can help tired old backs and aching bones. Look for special firm padding at sewing centers, too, if you want to try and make one of these. Ask the store attendants / sales reps for help.

5) Get creative with your bed and think inside the box, like in the cat-and-the-hat who had would eat green eggs and ham in a box. Place your bed in a box. Add a dog toy fox…who wears yellow sox…get the picture?

6) Coordinate accessories to go with your bed, too. How about a matching pillow, blanket and stuffed animal for your doggie? Find coordinating fabrics at sewing centers and online.

7) Think a little bigger and check out doggie couches, too. There are wonderful miniature couches out there for pets, some complete with arms and back. Comfortable and cute, some are stackable, smaller sizes stacking up atop the large ones. And some are wide enough for more than one dog. Doggie rocker / recliners may be the next thing, who knows!

8) Also think about dog mats and other bedding, horseshoe styles, other materials types like microfiber or suede. Save fuel, driving time and stress form running around time, and see all types of these in online pet stores. You’ll be amazed at the availability today.

So when you need a gift for a pet lover, think about giving a dog bed.  The dog, the owner and the owner’s wallet and furniture will love you and thank you for it many times over!

Electric Fireplaces, Traditional Changes

September 17th, 2009

Whether you use traditional or electric fireplaces, these features are great additions to a home. From Christmas carols to love scenes, a fireplace has always had a traditional place in both American culture, and in American home design.  A great number of people wouldn’t really consider their home to be complete without a fireplace it’s become that much of a staple of home design.  As it rightly should, since a fireplace is much more than just a simple design trick.  Not only does it heat up a room, a valuable commodity in places with cold climates, but a fireplace can create a warm, comforting atmosphere in any room where it’s being used.

However, for all their good looks and warmth, fireplaces can also be a great pain of a chore.  Take a wood burning fireplace, just for an example.  First of all, many homes which have wood burning fireplaces are either in the city, or the suburbs.  That means that wood has to be purchased, or transported a long way to their home.  Even for those closer to the source of their wood however need to cut, stack, and haul said fuel.  And once all the cutting, hauling, and stacking is done, a fire must actually be built inside a wood burning fireplace.  It sounds simple, but there is often a bit of art in building a fire with nothing more than wood.  And of course, there’s the fact that once the fire is out there is the soot and ash to clean up.  All in all, a wood burning fireplace can be quite the chore.

Unfortunately one doesn’t get out of the tiresome chore of clean up just by switching from a wood burning fireplace to a gas burning one.  Starting a fire in a gas burning fireplace is a great deal easier than starting it in a wood burning fireplace, but there is still the issue of bringing in wood, and of cleaning up once the fire is out.  In addition, a gas burning fireplace will add on a considerable amount to your natural gas bill, particularly if it is used often during the cold winter months.  In addition, both of these kinds of fireplaces have the added drawback that you can’t really leave the room until the fire is out for fear that a spark or ember might fall out and burn down your home.  Quite a lot of drawbacks just for the simple comforts of a warm fire to light up your living room.

One popular alternative to the more traditional fireplaces that’s been seen a great deal in the past few years are electric fireplaces.  The flames that electrical fireplaces simulate are very authentic looking, though they aren’t in and of themselves actual flame.  However, to stand in front of an electric fireplace, the illusion of the fire is made nearly complete by the heat that it produces.  In addition, the mantles and facades that come with any electric fireplace are often very classy, and can add something to any room that they’re installed in.

Electric fireplaces, by and large, are a great deal more efficient than either of the other two types of fireplaces mentioned above.  To put it in perspective, an electric fireplace uses roughly the same amount of energy as a space heater, and cost roughly 1/3 as much as running a gas powered fireplace.  And on top of the cost differential, an electric fireplace has no emissions, and loses no energy up the fireplace chimney, which is one of the larger problems with pure wood burning fireplaces.  In addition to saving money, and the effort of reducing the various chores associated with more traditional fireplaces more than makes an electric fireplace worth the cost.

An electric fireplace is easy to install, safe, and portable.  They heat up quickly, shut down just as fast, and there’s no waiting for the fire to go out… just turn it off when you’re done for the evening.  In addition, an electric fireplace can be installed in any home, or even an apartment, where a fireplace wouldn’t normally be.  But best of all is that electric fireplaces are very environmentally friendly.  When wood is burned, the stored carbon inside of it is released into the atmosphere, which results in a build up of more green house gases.  Trees are storehouses for those gases, holding them inside and using them to build their trunks.  When burned, those gases are released back into the atmosphere.  Since an electric fireplace doesn’t use wood, it is not only more efficient, and fairly cheap in the long run, but is convenient, and environmentally friendly.

Bathroom Vanity Sets can Update your Bathroom

September 17th, 2009

Are you tired of your outdated bathroom, but don’t want a full-scale renovation? The installation of new fixtures, like a new bathroom vanity can completely overhaul an old, outdated look. From classic and feminine, to modern and sleek, this new addition can add a large dash of style to your bathroom.

Depending on your personal style, different looks, textures and fixtures might be accounted for in your choices. aged fixtures, white countertops and muted colors might make for a classic, feminine look, while sleeker lines and more industrial materials like chrome, granite and steel can add contemporary drama, and woods can evoke a classic appeal. With all the pieces available, design possibilities are limited only by the imagination of the designer.

The size of the bathroom vanity should correspond to the size, shape and scale of the bathroom it is to be placed in. Careful measurements should always be taken to avoid mishaps wherein the vanity is too large or small in scale. Small furniture in a large room might create a sense of emptiness, while over-large and ornate pieces might gave the place a small or cluttered feel.

A bathroom in an unusual size or irregular shape may need custom made furnishings. While these are usually more expensive than pre-manufactured pieces, they have the advantage of being totally customizable, and colors, materials, sizes and shapes may be combined as desired.

Double bathroom vanities might be one solution for couples or families who put a premium on their own space. Two sinks mean less competition over the sink, and the addition of more countertop and storage space allow every member of the family his or her own privacy. These also tend to have larger or double mirrors.

Bathrooms that are not as generously built might need some help in order for them to look more spacious and graceful. A wall-mounted or pedestal sink might help by looking lighter than a counter mounted one. It would, however, have the disadvantage of less counter space for toiletries and bathroom items, and might be a more useful choice.

The mirror is also an important thing to think about. Mirrors are usually installed so as not to be wider than the bathroom vanity itself, and, placed correctly, can make a space look larger and more elegant. With as many choices of frames as the vanities themselves, a well thought out placement and installation can add value and bring luxury into any home.

Need to breathe new life into an outdated bathroom? A new bathroom vanity can give you unlimited options to choose from to bring out your personal style. From glass and chrome modern bathroom vanities to romantic double bath vanities for couples, from classic to contemporary styles, this new addition can easily up the style factor and increase the value of your home.

Enjoy a Fireplace without the Work

September 9th, 2009

Fireplaces are great for almost any room. They offer heat, and they create a generally warm atmosphere, even when you don’t feel the warmth from the fire. Most people, when thinking of fireplaces, think of that picture-perfect view of sitting by a fireplace with snow falling outside the window. A good book in one hand and a hot cup of cocoa in the other…this is what makes the perfect fireplace scene. However, fireplaces are great in any home, even when you don’t get much snow each year.

Fireplaces also have some negative aspects, though. Whether it is a wood burning traditional fireplace or a gas operated fireplace, they can be a pain in their own ways. Wood burning fireplaces require that you always have wood handy in order to experience the warmth of the fire. When you decide to light a fire, you then have to build it and get it rolling, only to have to stoke it and rearrange the wood periodically to keep the fire going. When you are done with the fire for the evening, you have to wait for the fire to burn out completely before leaving the room. They also make a mess, the chimney has to be cleaned, and you have to clean up the ash and soot. Gas burning fireplaces also take work. While you don’t have to chop wood, you do still have to maintain the fireplace. And, on top of that, the use of your gas fireplace will increase your gas bill.

Electric fireplaces are a great alternative to traditional fireplaces. They provide flames that look authentic and heat that can provide you with warmth in the same way a traditional fireplace does, but without the mess or all the hard work necessary for traditional style fireplaces. The mantels and facades look authentic as well, making them great for any room in the house. Since you can find them in a variety of styles and sizes, you are sure to find one that gives the look you desire to achieve through your fireplace.

This type of fireplace is also much easier to install than a traditional fireplace. You don’t have to tear up or add on to any walls, you don’t have to run a chimney or flute, you simply plug it up and it is ready to go. With their variety of sizes, you can choose one for any room, and you don’t even have to mull over this permanent decision, because with an electric fireplace, the decision isn’t permanent. Instead, this electric fireplace can be moved from room to room wherever you want it at that particular moment. And, you can even take it with you when you move.

They quickly heat up and cool down so no need to build a fire every time you want to enjoy the warmth from flames. And, you don’t have to wait for a fire to go out before leaving a room, making them safer than traditional fireplaces.

If you are worried about the amount of electricity an electric fireplace would use, possibly increasing your utility bills, there is no need to worry any longer. For the electric use, they only cost about as much as running a space heater, while looking nicer and providing you with more warmth. They also only use about 1/3 of the energy it takes to run a gas-powered fireplace, so you are getting more warmth for your buck. They are also much more efficient than traditional wood burning fireplaces, because they don’t release any energy through the chimney, meaning all that energy is used to heat the room and the people in it. Plus, they are great for the environment. They don’t use as many natural resources as gas-powered fireplaces, and they don’t release any emissions into the air the way chimney fireplaces do. So you get to save money and save the planet all while heating your home!

With all these considerations, it is no wonder that electric fireplaces are growing in popularity. With their ability to provide heat as well as the look of a genuine fireplace, but with less cost, work, and damage to the environment, they make a great option for heat in the wintertime. Also, it is important to note that the heat can be turned off and the flames can be enjoyed alone, using less energy and allowing you to enjoy an open flame even on warm days.

Oil Soluble Stains and Dyes for Wood

August 11th, 2009

Oil-Soluble Wood-Stains

Oil-soluble dyes do not form a distinct class of colors either chemically or by application. Colors from any of the various coal tar groups that happen to be soluble in any one of the volatile oils are selected, especially the kinds that are most permanent on exposure to sunlight.

Some of the best oil-soluble dyes for use as stains on wood are found in the following list:

  • Red—Bismarck Brown,
  • Carmosine, and Oil Scarlet 6 G.
  • Orange—Oil Orange G, and Oil Orange Y (extra concentrated).
  • Yellow—Oil Yellow, Auramine Yellow, and Naphthalene Yellow.
  • Green—A mixture of yellow and blue.
  • Blue—Victoria Blue.
  • Brown—Oil Brown M, Loutre, and Seal Brown.
  • Brown Mahogany—Orange G or Y, and Naphthalene Black, or Oil Brown  M.
  • Black—Oil Black, oil soluble Nigrosine, and Naphthalene.

Oil soluble colors are usually dissolved in turpentine, but benzene or benzol, naphtha, gasoline, and carbon tetrachloride, can also be used as solvents for nearly all such colors.

Classes of Dyes Used in Wood-Finishing

Most of the books and magazine articles which have been written about dyes have been produced for the textile colorist or dyer, rather than for the person who wishes to use dyes for the purpose of staining wood fireplace designs, wood frames, or frieze boards. The dyes themselves were usually manufactured for dyeing cloth rather than for staining wood. Consequently the characteristics of the various dyes are usually given with reference to their reaction on various kinds of cloth fibers.

Acid coal tar dyes are used by the textile dyer to color fibers of silk and wool. Many of these acid dyes will not color cotton fibers, but they will easily stain the lignocellulose fibers, which compose the chief mass of wood substance. Practically any of the acid coal tar dyes which are ordinarily used for dyeing silk and wool can be considered as satisfactory stains for wood.

Dyes for cloth must prove satisfactory in various tests such as fastness to light, fastness to washing, fastness to milling, and also to “stoving,” to crocking, or to rubbing. In selecting an acid coal tar dye for use as a wood stain the chief considerations are fastness to light and the price of the dyestuff. The best of the acid coal-tar dyes are the most lightproof colors that can be obtained and are now used extensively as wood-stains for wood frames, wood corner blocks, and wood fireplace accessories.

Acid dyes can usually be mixed together to form new colors, even though the individual dyes may come from different chemical groups. Acid dyes should not be mixed with basic colors, even though the latter may be soluble in water, nor should either of these groups of stains be combined with spirit soluble or oil soluble dyes. They are not usually acid in reaction but are alkaline salts of sodium, potassium, or ammonium.

Basic dyes are usually chlorides, but occasionally other salts such as sulphates, olalates, acetates, or nitrates are found. If an acid dye in a solution of water is mixed with a basic dye in an aqueous solution, a chemical reaction may take place, and a new substance which is soluble in water may be formed. In some cases a compound neutral dye may be produced. Direct or salt dyes can be used in much the same manner as acid dyes for staining wood.

In fact, direct colors can often be mixed with acid colors in preparing wood stains. The mixing of colors from the different application classes involves a greater risk, however, and is not recommended. Basic dyes when used by the textile-dyer are dissolved in water, are often used on cotton, and are “fixed” with a mordant. Basic dyes are generally soluble in alcohol, and are the colors used by a wood finisher when he wishes spirit soluble colors for designer window toppers, fireplace designs, or wood corner blocks.

In general, basic colors are more fugitive than acid coal tar dye colors. Hence they are not as satisfactory for use in stains for wood. Dyestuffs taken from the other application classes, while useful and practicable as textile-dyes, are rarely used on wood because of the difficulty in application to such material. In other words, mordant dyes, pigment dyes, developing colors, sulphur colors, and vat dyes are not in common use by wood finishers, though they are valuable textile dyes.

Cleaning Marble – Requirements to Effective Process

July 17th, 2009

To clean marble is to execute a process. That process is needed to continue the functions of marble. Those functions can be best fulfilled if the cleaning is efficiently and effectively completed. And to make that happen, there are various things that need considering.

Among those things are the requirements of the cleaning marble process. If you can not complete those requirements, the effects of the process will be as well incomplete. And so to make the cleaning bear the desired best effects, it would be a big help to know those requirements and to have them collected for the complete execution of the cleaning.

In a deeper look at the cleaning marble process, it has two sets of requirements. The first are the basic requirements and the second are the additional requirements.

The first set is the one that will allow you to execute the process while the second set will make it produce more than the average effects. These two got varying contributions on different levels. Nevertheless, both are needed as the absence of one will greatly and negatively affect the whole cleaning.

Here are those requirements in a more detailed perspective:

Basic Requirements:

  • Time – Every process needs time to be completed. And so to clean marble, time is a requirement. Without it, you will not be able to start the cleaning in the first place. And if you don’t have enough of it, the effectiveness of the process will be ill affected.

  • Effortcleaning marble will not bear satisfying result if you won’t exert enough effort. If you will do every step of the process hastily and unenthusiastically, better not expect for exceptional effects. What you reap is what you sow, so if you want the best effects, work for it.

  • Money – Whether you will hire professionals to clean your marble or do it yourself, money is needed. Of course, there is a difference as to how much will be spent. However, you can always make it a worthy spending by going for the best service and best product that you can get.

Additional Requirements:

  • Knowledge – Knowledge is power. And in cleaning marble, that power will make the process more effective. The more you know about marble and the methods to clean it the better you can execute the steps and the greater effects you can accumulate. It will generally assist you in making wise decisions that affects the process.

  • Marble Cleaner – This is what makes the cleaning faster and easier to accomplish. It also makes it more effective with the solutions that are specifically formulated to counter things like stains and spills that can damage the marble surface. There are many marble floor cleaners or marble products in the market. To clean marble more effectively, safely pick those of green ingredients as they are less harmful with their minimal chemical components.

  • Patience – As it will take time for the cleaning marble process to be completed, you will need patience. Rushing the steps or jumping to the next without completing the previous ones yet will compromise the effectiveness of the entire cleaning method.

Enhance your Bathroom Affordably: Double Vanities

July 9th, 2009

Double bathroom vanities might just be the solution you need in your bathroom. With an economy that is in turmoil, many people are saving their money instead of splurging on unnecessary items. Often, this means that any home remodeling projects that are being done simply for looks and not out of necessity are being put on the back burner. However, it is possible to simply scale back your remodeling plans instead of abandoning them altogether. Many people are finding that you can do simple things to remake any room in the home, such as the bathroom, and not have the expense of a full-scale renovation. If you would really like to renovate your bathroom, but a complete change is no longer an option, you can do simple things to make the bathroom better. One such way to make a change in your bathroom without splurging on a complete remodel is to install a double bathroom vanity.

Did you know that the cost of a typical renovation on a small bathroom is more than $20,000? This is why so many people truly have to think of other ways to make their bathrooms look spectacular without spending money they may need if the economy continues on the path it is on. Often, this investment doesn’t seem like much when considering that remodeling a bathroom is usually one of the best investments you can make in your home, because it will increase the value by much more than the cost of the renovation. But in a market that has no guarantee of sale, it is difficult to make this type of investment with its uncertainty. That’s why installing a double vanity in your bathroom can be a great option—it is nowhere near the cost of a complete renovation, but it does add more value than the cost, so it is win-win. Plus, you get to enjoy your new bathroom with its double vanity without spending your nest egg.

Double vanities are perfect for master bathrooms, typically because there are two people using this bathroom on a regular basis. The double vanity will supply you with double the storage space than a regular vanity or cabinet, so each person will have space for their personal products and toiletries. This also allows more room for towels and cleaning supplies as well. Not only is there space for storage for two people, but there are also two sinks in a double vanity. This means that the two people who share the bathroom will no longer have to argue over who gets the sink first, or feel rushed to get out of the way for the other person. Both people can get ready at the same time, and each can take as much time as they need without interfering in the other person’s ability to get ready. This also works to provide a place where discussions can be had while getting ready in the mornings, something that is hard to achieve with one sink.

Double bathroom vanities come at a fraction of the cost for a complete renovation, but they instantly supply style and efficiency, as well as boost the value of the bathroom. They come in a variety of styles and sizes, so it is easy to find one that will work in your bathroom.

Since they do come in many styles, you will want to shop around to find the one that will look perfect in your bathroom. You can find them in traditional, antique, or contemporary vanity styles so it will be easy to match the current décor of your bathroom. Wood color and metal finishes are available, so the choices are almost endless.

Unlike a complete renovation, double bathroom vanities are easy to install, and installation can often be complete in one day. This means you get to instantly enjoy your new addition to your bathroom. They are also very durable and easy to take care of, so you won’t be increasing your workload, and they will last a long time in your bathroom.

Leading economists do not expect the economy to take off any time soon, and with this uncertainty, we must be smart with our money. Even though we are experiencing a financial crisis that is expected to last a while, there is no reason homeowners can’t remake their bathrooms, it just needs to be done differently than it would in a thriving economy.

By using a double bathroom vanity, you can enhance your bathroom without breaking the bank or putting yourself in an insecure financial position.

The Legacy of Dr. Frankel

July 8th, 2009

In 1920 the company helped to organize the Committee on Administrative Practice of the American Public Health Association, which made a systematic investigation of the work of the larger health departments throughout the country. The work of this committee, originally financed by the Metropolitan, brought about much improvement in standards by developing methods of measuring the effectiveness of health departments.

The ability thus to evaluate city health work through accurate records opened an approach to stimulate community leaders to more active public health campaigns in their own cities. This made possible the City Health Conservation Contest, launched by the American Public Health Association in 1929, with financial support by the Metropolitan and other life insurance companies offering all types of life insurance and with the cooperation of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States.

These contests vividly revealed the actual achievements of communities in the health field, as well as the improvements made from year to year. Since the project was inaugurated, more than 500 American cities enrolled and without exception reported improved health conditions and lowered mortality. Separate contests under other auspices were developed for rural communities and for Canada, and were given great impetus to the health services of many outlying towns.

It is significant that Dr. Frankel’s last effort was concerned with the newer developments of social insurance in Europe and with its possible applications to American life. In the summer of 1931 he went abroad with Actuary and term life insurance specialist James D. Craig from the life insurance company to survey the scope and administration of such programs. This survey was an expression of a fundamental interest which dominated his life - to bring ever increasing security to wage earners through the medium of insurance.

He was fortunately able to bring the work to a substantial conclusion before his sudden death in Paris on July 25, 1931. This study proved a fitting climax to a career of service to his company and to his country. It constituted the groundwork for new types of private insurance and helped in the development of our present Federal system of unemployment and old age insurance.

It is difficult to evaluate a personality that was as fertile and constructive as that of Dr. Frankel. His activities covered many fields in areas other than no exam life insurance, life insurance basics, and what is term life insurance in regards to health protection, but he was always the servant of mankind. The creation of the welfare division of the company was his greatest achievement. He put the mark of his humanity on the Metropolitan, helping to transform it from a typical business organization into an institution for social progress.

The whole field of life insurance felt the effect of this effort. He also brought new vigor to American public health work, both official and voluntary. In 1919 he served as President of the American Public Health Association. He found new sources of financial support for it, and as a result the Association has grown in prestige and effectiveness.

He was a prime mover in the formation of the National Health Council, which brought together various national associations in each field of public health, enabling them to further their common aims and to prevent wasteful duplication of effort. He held high office and served on important committees in virtually all the leading health organizations. His influence on the American health movement has been deep and lasting.

Establishment of a Sanatorium for Tuberculosis Patients

June 28th, 2009

The outstanding feature of the medical program for employees of Metropolitan life insurance company was the extraordinary reduction of tuberculosis among them. The concern of company executives over employees falling ill with tuberculosis long antedated any organized plan for their care. At first the company paid for treatment of employees at private sanatoria.

But in the beginning of the 20th century the officers felt that the best solution of the problem of tuberculosis among employees, which was by far the most frequent cause of chronic disability, was to care for them, at company expense, in a sanatorium owned and operated by the company. This plan could not be carried out by the life insurance company until the important legal obstacle forbidding  types of life insurance companies offering affordable life insurance to own real estate unless necessary for the direct use of the business, was overcome.

A friendly suit instituted in the Supreme Court of New York State was decided in favor of the company, and in a historic decision the court said “The reasonable care of its employees, according to the enlightened sentiment of the age and the community, is a duty resting upon it (the company), and the proper discharge of that duty is merely transacting the business of the corporation.”

The Metropolitan lost no time in picking a good site for the projected institution, at Mount McGregor, in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains in New York State. The planning and erection of the sanatorium were speedily carried out, and in November 1913 it was ready for its first patients.  Dr. Horace J. Howk was in charge of the sanatorium from the beginning. He was a physician of great skill and administrative ability, who also possessed a warm personality which endeared him to his many patients and associates.

At his death in 1926 he was succeeded by his capable colleague, Dr. William H. Ordway. In between 1913 and 1943, when term life insurance basics were being ironed out, more than 3,000 life insurance company employees, experts at life insurance rates, and field men received treatment there for tuberculosis. With its own sanatorium in operation, the company was in a position to develop a unique and thorough plan for the control of tuberculosis in its home office staff.

By means of pre-employment examinations it was possible largely to avoid the introduction of new cases, while constant health supervision of the working force brought about early detection of cases occurring among its personnel. These cases could be given the benefit of adequate sanatorium treatment, which was maintained until they were able to work. During this period patients received a large part of their normal income from disability benefit payments, and the resulting freedom from economic worries helped measurably toward their recovery.

The restoration of the patient to his job was also one of the most significant parts of the program. The “graduate” of the typical sanatorium usually had the difficult task of finding suitable employment, especially at an insurance company in the no exam term life insurance business. Often the doors to an affordable life insurance company were closed to him because of his history of tuberculosis. The rehabilitation of the patient, the weakest link in the national program of tuberculosis control, was a vital and valuable part of the scheme at the Metropolitan.

How to Personalize Your Cupcakes

June 3rd, 2009

Sweet flavors, colorful icings, and all those pretty candy toppers. There’s certainly a lot to like about cupcakes, but everyone agrees that the best part is decorating them to suit one’s tastes. From flowers and animals to holiday-themed decorations, there’s no shortage of cupcake ideas for every occasion. In fact, the reason they’re quickly taking over cakes in American kitchens is that they’re so versatile—you can personalize them to suit the occasion and make your guests feel truly appreciated. But how can you come up with new cupcake ideas every time?

Like any kitchen project, decorating cupcakes is all about using your own creativity and following your own tastes. You can get ideas from local bakeries, magazines, or even previous parties you’ve had. It also helps if you have a theme going for your event, as you can simply decorate your cupcakes accordingly. When properly made and decorated, cupcakes can set the tone for your party and even serve as your main attraction. If you’re not sure how to start, these quick tips can give you a few ideas.

Start with basic recipes.

Cupcakes don’t have to be elaborate to be appreciated. Even simple flavors can become the star of the party with the right presentation. And by sticking to the basics, you spend less time making the cakes themselves and more time perfecting your decorations. So ditch the fancy cookbooks, grab your favorite chocolate cupcake recipe, and start baking right away. There’s a chocolate lover in everyone, so you can be sure they’ll be a great hit no matter how they’re made.

It’s not just chocolate, of course. Since cupcakes are basically just smaller cakes, you can take any cake recipe and just recreate it as a cupcake. Plain chiffon cupcakes are really easy to make and can be adjusted to suit anyone’s tastes. So if you’re baking for someone with a sweet tooth, go ahead and add more sugar. Or if you’re watching your weight, you can do the opposite and make a guilt-free version. No matter what you’re into, there’s a classic cupcake recipe that’s sure to fit.

Top off with frosting.

Some people call it frosting; others say it’s icing. In the baking industry, the main difference is that frosting is spreadable while icing is usually piped on. Whatever you call it, it’s a vital part of cupcake decorating. Not only does it add flavor to your cake, it also helps you customize each piece and make them look more appetizing. You can make basic icing with egg whites, sugar and cream, but if you’re in a real hurry, you can also just use store-bought frosting and add in some food color.

It’s also important to use the right frosting for your cupcake. For example, a lemon cream cheese frosting might go well on a carrot or gingerbread cupcake, but not on richer flavors like chocolate. One thing you can do is go for contrast: if the cupcake is rich and heavy, balance it out with a lighter icing, and vice versa. That way, they’re never too rich or too bland, and there’s a nice bit of contrast in every bite.

Stick to a theme.

As we’ve mentioned above, cupcakes are easier to decorate when you have a theme going. Try including cupcakes in your party planning so you can better plan out your cupcake decorations. It doesn’t have to be an elaborate theme—sometimes even just a dominant color or pattern can really set your event apart. Look for a theme that suits the occasion. Most cake shops carry seasonal decorating sets, so you shouldn’t have much trouble finding the right decorations.

One thing that always seem to work are animal cupcakes. Cute and colorful, these are perfect for setting off an animal party theme. Kids are sure to enjoy the little critters adorning your table, and adults will definitely appreciate your creative effort. It’s especially ideal for children’s parties, as they suit both girls’ and boys’ themes and will appeal to every child. If you’re not feeling too creative, just get some frosted cupcakes and use animal toppers to decorate them. Use a dab of frosting as glue and simply stick them on top of the cake before serving.

Use decorative liners.

You’ll notice that cupcakes usually come with paper liners at the bottom. These are not just to hold them in place—they also keep them from sticking to the pan and make them much easier to remove. Some people just use butter or oil, but cupcake liners are much neater and often double as decorative holders.

Besides the plain white cups, you can also find liners in all colors and materials, including metallic ones. Most stores also carry seasonal patterns, so you can use liners that really fit the occasion. Just arrange those colorfully lined cupcakes on a platter or cake board, and you’ve got the perfect finishing touch for your party.

Designing to scale and considering perspective

May 26th, 2009

There are a few common mistakes people make when drawing up their own landscape plans. These mistakes are not usually made by landscape contractors, who are trained to avoid them.

The first group of mistakes relates to the idea of scale. We have all seen the conifer that has “taken over” a plot of land and now towers over the house, dropping the occasional branch in a high wind, shedding needles onto the roof and, although beautiful, being a general nuisance. Bought as a tiny tree, it was planted in the wrong place - too close to the house - and its owners are living to regret it. Similarly, shrubs are frequently planted too close together, because the planting plan did not take into account the size to which each would grow, or, worse, there never were any landscaping planting plans. It is important to clearly identify the species of trees and shrubs you intend to grow on your site, and then to establish how tall and how wide they will eventually grow. Often that information is provided on the label when you purchase the item, or you can look up the details in an appropriate gardening book, or online. Once you know its final size, leave sufficient space for the plant to grow to that size without intruding on other plants, or structures, in the garden.

Scale should also be taken into account when you are planning paths, steps, terraces and the like. Frequently, these areas are made too small to be comfortable - possibly because their designer is locked into thinking in indoor terms and does not appreciate that being outside, with the sky for a roof, needs a large canvas and a broader brush. The “walls” of an outdoor room are much further apart than those indoors, so in your landscaping planning ideas you need to think “wide” for paths, “generous” for steps and “comfortable” for terraces. Two people should be able to walk easily alongside each other on paths and steps and there should be ample sitting space on a terrace. Remember that terraces usually hold outdoor furniture, containers, barbecues and so on, all bulky items that take up space.

The second group of mistakes relates to perspective - how things appear as they recede into the distance. Because a landscape plan is, necessarily, made on paper, and is therefore two dimensional, it is very hard to imagine the third dimension and to get an idea of how it will all look from eye-level. Again, your landscaping contractor, who is educated in design techniques, will be able to do this for you.

If you have a small garden and want it to look larger, a useful trick (one that was often used by Renaissance landscape designers) is to have a tapering path leading to a focal point, such as a statue or an arbor. The path starts out wide and narrows as it goes towards the feature. However, you need to remember that, when looking back down the path, the opposite, foreshortening effect will be brought about. This may not matter, but is worth considering.

If you are planning a curving path, or any other freeform feature, perhaps a pond, remember that in two dimensions curves may appear quite gentle, but once the plan becomes reality the same curves may seem excessive. It is best to check curves by marking them out using twine, or even your flexible garden hose, in the place where they are required, in order to create a smooth-flowing design that looks satisfactory from every angle.

The old “KISS” (Keep It Simple, Silly) idea can apply to your landscaping plans as it does to other aspects of life. By planting too few items rather than too many; making sure plants are at a suitable distance from the house or other structures; allowing paths and steps generous proportions; and not exaggerating freeform features, you will be rewarded with the “elegant simplicity” that is the hallmark of good design.

Unique Kitchen Ideas

May 12th, 2009

Modern, country, traditional, Victorian—there’s no shortage of design themes when it comes to kitchens. But with so much to choose from, it’s still easy to run out of kitchen ideas for your home. That’s why a lot of people end up with kitchens that are either mismatched, poorly equipped, or simply not in tune with their tastes. But just because you don’t have that creative touch doesn’t mean you have to settle for an average kitchen. Sometimes, all it takes is a few minor tweaks to turn your kitchen from blah to beautiful.

Think about it: how would your kitchen look if you changed the walls to your favorite color, or replaced your old counter with a shiny new marble top? Most "designer" kitchens are stylish but lack that personal touch that makes it feel like your own. That’s why it’s often the little quirks that set a kitchen apart. A little change can go a long way—if you know where to put it. Here are some simple things you can do to give your kitchen that instant makeover.

Create a feng shui kitchen

Feng shui is a traditional Chinese art wherein household items are arranged to encourage the flow of positive energy into the home. But these beliefs aside, feng shui has many other benefits. Experts have observed that feng shui kitchen design is also a combination of easy function and visual appeal. So whether or not you subscribe to this school of thought, it won’t hurt to follow the rules—at the very least, you’ll have a nice-looking kitchen that’s still very much usable.

There are literally thousands of rules in feng shui, but you don’t need to know all of them. The key concept is to keep everything simple, bright, and open. For instance, you should keep gadgets to a minimum, keeping only the ones you really need. Avoid all forms of clutter and make sure the kitchen is well-lit at all times. Try to bring in natural elements wherever possible by using more wood, stone, or indoor plants.

Take it outdoors

Here’s another idea from the Asians: bringing the kitchen outdoors. Asian design tends to blur the line between indoor and outdoor areas, so you never really know where one starts and the other ends. Because of its busy nature, the kitchen is the ideal place to implement this style. An outdoor kitchen not only leaves you more floor space, but gives you a more open, comfortable place to work. Most of the items can easily be moved outdoors, and the added space makes it easier to rearrange.

The main problem with outdoor kitchens is the harsher environment it’s exposed to. Everything from the counter to the pots and pans should be able to withstand the elements. If you get extreme temperatures or frequent rains, you may want to put up a small shelter to protect your bigger appliances. Invest in heavy-duty basics such as stainless steel sinks, cast iron cookware, and efficient outdoor storage for all the little pieces.

Start an herb garden

Green living is all the rage these days, and what’s a better way to do that than growing your own ingredients? Many people are getting into gardening as a way to reduce their carbon footprints and cut down on spending at the same time. Herb gardening is especially popular because it’s fast, cheap, and doesn’t require a lot of space. Fresh herbs not only spice up your cooking, they also add a nice aroma to your kitchen throughout the day.

If you don’t have outdoor space or only have a small kitchen, you can start with a couple of small pots and just work your way up from there. Put the pots close to your window or hang them from the top, so that they can get adequate sunlight. Water them regularly to make sure they grow well. If properly placed and maintained, they can add a fresh, breezy look to the room and even become your kitchen’s focal point.

Throw in some area rugs

Kitchen floors get more abuse than most people notice. Besides the constant foot traffic, there’s also the occasional spill, dropped pans, or muddy shoes from outdoors. If you don’t have the time or budget to replace your flooring, you can at least protect your existing one with kitchen area rugs. Manufacturers are now offering protective rugs designed for the kitchen environment, but with the same styles and designs seen in living room rugs.

Synthetic rugs usually work best for the kitchen because they’re easy to maintain and keep their color quite well. One of the most popular materials is polypropylene, a plastic-based fiber made to look like natural fibers, such as wool and cotton. Its main advantage is the variety of colors available, which lets you match your rug with your kitchen’s theme. Just pick one that goes with your current colors and you’ve got the perfect finishing touch for your kitchen.

Landscaping For Privacy

May 11th, 2009

Most people live in a world that is full of rush and bustle, often noisy and crowded. It is good to have a place at home, however small, where you can be outdoors and be private at the same time. With the modern trend towards outdoor living, cooking and dining, privacy becomes more important rather than less, especially if you enjoy entertaining and want your guests to feel comfortable in your outdoor setting.

If your site is already well screened by trees or shrubs, or if you are fortunate enough to live on a large block of land, perhaps in the country somewhere, then you are one of the lucky ones. However, if this is not the case in your garden or landscaping ideas, you can still, with the help of your landscape contractor, attain privacy by careful positioning of manmade walls, screens or fences, or with judicious planting of appropriate screening shrubs or trees.

Personal preference, what you can afford, and the character of your site, all influence how you go about providing a private space for outdoor living.

Manmade walls vary from the very simple wall of concrete blocks that is easy for an amateur to erect, to custom-built structures made in molds by concrete fencing specialists or landscaping contractors to look like stone, brick or wood. Fences can be of solid timber or planks of lumber, separated by wide or narrow gaps. Non-invasive bamboo makes a great “living fence” for an attractive screen in any part of the garden. All manmade fences can be softened by suitable plantings, perhaps of climbers, or creepers like ivy.

Remember that you can achieve privacy with a screen that is open in texture, like a trellis, just as well as you can with a solid brick wall, provided the screen has sufficient body to break the pattern of movement and shapes that can be seen behind it. In fact, if the privacy wall is also to be a windbreak, it is better for it to have an open texture so that the disruptive downdrafts associated with solid structures will not be a feature.

To block a neighbour’s view of your terrace, a tall screen or hedge, planted near the terrace, may be all that is required - you may not need that head-high fence circling your lot like a mini-Alcatraz. The closer to the sitting area the screen is placed, the more privacy it will afford to those behind it. However, if the screen is built nearer your property line, you will get a better view out from the terrace itself.

It is also possible to purchase portable privacy screens for outdoors. These come in a varirty of shapes, sizes and colors and are an innovative and effective way to achieve privacy in your garden wherever and whenever it is required.

Sometimes overhead screening is necessary in landscape design ideas, especially if you live at the foot of a hill with other houses above, or if there is a multi-storied house right next door. In this case a pergola, covered in an evergreen climber such as jasmine, may provide what you want. Even a carefully placed tree, with spreading branches, can give you a place to relax in summer, where you will not be overlooked.

Privacy may also involve escaping from unwanted sound. To really control sound entering your garden, a solid structure is needed, for example, a stone wall, which will stop most airborne noise crossing into your space. If your outdoor area is subject to excessive noise - maybe you live on a main traffic route - you can gain some relief from the constant daily bombardment by introducing “white noise” - a constant, light sound like the splashing of a fountain can help mask other noise, making it less troublesome.

Water Fountains As Premium Home Decor.

April 20th, 2009

Decorating homes have become one of the most popular and exciting forms of personal hobbies around the globe. Every where you look people are trying to spend time and money to improve the appearance of their homes. water fountains have been a popular design element for centuries. Garden fountains have been a symbol and use of design as far back as the ancient Greeks. Outdoor water fountains present a lovely and magical design element that intrigues people’s interest. Today you can bring the water fountains indoor to decorate your homes and have the lovely outdoor presence inside your home. One option is using a wall fountain. Wall fountains can be hung on any wall or walkway and display an element of interest to any person that walks by. The fountain brings the outdoor life inside your home and looks incredible.

Wall fountains look wonderful and can be placed in every room in your home. They are easy to put up and can be placed anywhere. The setup is easy and takes little time. Wall fountains install flat against the wall and can be done in a matter of minutes. The materials that make up the wall fountains make them unique and stylish. They do not need to be decorated because they look great as soon as they are placed on the wall. The wall fountains provide an exciting way of designing your home that many people love. Metals are often used to construct indoor wall fountains for stability and sturdiness. Metals are made from thin sheets that are shaped to be ornate and made of good quality. The masterful design for these wall fountains makes them a centerpiece for any room in your home.

Another type of wall fountain is the copper fountains. Copper fountains come in elegant shapes used primarily for decorating. The shapes work well and compliment the flowing water. One thing copper does well as compared to metal is that it brings out natural colors of nature in the fountain. The fountain is an artwork design and really shows through with a brilliance appearance of nature and a flow of running water. The copper discolors overtime into a beautiful patina. There are also many other highlights that compliment the natural appearance of these fountains. There are many designs from nature designs to more modern designs that give people the option of what they might like to have hanging in their home. Whatever the preference may be, copper fountains are a great option to have in these designs.

Stainless steel fountains are another material or type of fountains that are produced. The stainless steel provides great quality and a color that will never fade. Stainless steel can be placed outside or inside and outlast the harsh weather all year long. There will never be any corrosion or deterioration of any stainless steel material over time. The stainless steel fountain provides a great option for homeowners. The stainless steel gives a strong modern touch and feel to any room the design is placed. There are some designs of stainless steel fountains that are paired with slate and glass. This combination of work works wonders and makes the fountain look even more elegant than before. The stainless steel fountains offer the best option for owners that may be worried about the longevity the fountain may have.

An option water fountains also give homes is they are made in different sizes. If a person thinks the wall fountain may be too large or overwhelming, then the table top fountain may be a better option. Table top fountains offer a fit to any small place in your home. The table top fountain can fit literally anywhere and still has the same intriguing design as a larger fountain. The table top fountain is most commonly made from stones, bamboo splits, glass, pebbles and seashells. The table top fountain provides the same natural fountain as the bigger fountains with the smaller convenient size. Regardless of the amount of size or space in your home, there is a indoor fountain that will fit any space in your home.

What To Avoid In Marble Granite Countertop Cleaning

April 14th, 2009

This information is important because it will prevent costly mistakes in granite countertop cleaning. By taking full advantage of this strategy of what to do and what not to do you will be able to restore your granite countertops effectively and cost effective.

Assuming that your kitchen counter-top is made either out of true or mercantile granite, green marble or soapstone or a hone-finished stone (if you have polished marble or polished travertine, then there’s not much that can be done to maintain their highly glossy finish, other than … well, never using your countertop!) there is one thing you must remember:

The Universale Rule For Granite Cleaning: Countertops, Walls, Floors, Bathroom Marble Etc

Don’t even think about using a glass cleaner or your common dish soap on your granite or marble countertops. These counters are used alot in daily cooking and cleaning, but by using these household cleaners you will find a huge costly mistake that will appear by discoloring your marble.

The simple fact is normal household cleaners are to acidic and non-neutral. This is a big problem for most marble cleaning companies. They will need products which are non abrasive as well as non-acidic. A common name for these type of cleaners is a neutral marble cleaner.

Using a “glass cleaner” or “water with a little dish soap” are common but erroneous recommendations that you may hear. Glass cleaners may turn out to be too harsh to both the stone and the sealer (if one has been applied), while water and dish soap can leave an unsanitary and unsightly film that will build up and become problematic to remove. (Wash your hands with dish soap and then rinse them under running water; observe how long and how much water it will take to rinse properly. To get the same rinsing result – which is the only one acceptable – for your countertops, you would have to rinse them with a garden hose!)

Your normal household cleaners which are manufactured and found in common stores are not the solution, and specialty granite cleaners specifically formulated to deal with the delicate chemistry of stone and marble are, your solution when granite counter cleaning is needed.

Below are important points you will want to know when cleaning granite countertops.
